Gee, I don’t know why I can’t get a job, not even as a cashier. Perhaps it’s this tattoo on my FACE? Perhaps it’s the reverse mohawk I have? Or the nosering? …
The images are beautiful but the rhetoric you’ve paired with it ruins it for me. I don’t think the issue here is that America failed these people …
Agreed, Bey. This is presented as though it’s some American failing…these are hippies and squatters, living a life of choice, and in most of these pics, they seem to be enjoying themselves. Great pics. Pointless rhetoric.
“Homeless?”
Hobos, tramps, bums…maybe. “Homeless” seems to imply they can’t help it. These people live a transient existence by choice; the stinkier the hippy the bigger the trust fund.
but they can afford to buy cigarettes…
The people featured in this photo series probably come from very different backgrounds + it would be interesting to know more about them.
Art school + no rich parents = cool hobo pics. Must have been a cool trip, although some of it doesn’t look all that happy.
These people are “travelers”. They are, for the most part, intentionally homeless, choosing to hop freight trains around the country, and live outside of society in a loose subculture. I remember reading about this series of pictures – a photojournalist gave one of these kids a camera, and got him to promise in exchange to send photos back to him.
that is undoubtedly a henna tattoo

Absolutely fantastic photos. Well done.
Freedom of choice…
I wish I were that rich! Than I could simply leave everything for a year or two, live like a hobo and call myself an artist!

Damn hippies
